Why Is Soap Alkaline? What pH-Balanced Bars Really Are
True soap always tests alkaline, usually between pH 8 and 11. Here is why that follows from the chemistry, and what a bar sold as pH 5.5 actually contains.

Every true soap is alkaline, measuring about pH 8 to 11 in water, because it is the salt of a weak acid and a strong base. A bar sold as pH 5.5 is built on synthetic detergents, because soap pushed down to that pH stops being soap.
Every true soap is alkaline. In a 2025 survey of 96 cleansing products, every bar soap measured between pH 8.01 and 11.01, while the syndets measured 4.99 to 7.78. The reason is one line of chemistry: soap is the salt of a weak acid and a strong base. Alkalinity is what soap is, not a flaw in the recipe.
What pH is real soap?
Real soap measures roughly pH 8 to 11 when dissolved in water. A university chemistry text puts a plain soap solution at slightly alkaline, pH 8 to 9, and the survey of retail bars found a wider spread. The table sets these beside skin.
| What was measured | pH | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Bar soaps (34 bars, 1% in distilled water) | 8.01 to 11.01, mean 10.25 | 2025 survey |
| Liquid cleansers, including syndets | 4.54 to 8.00 | 2025 survey |
| Syndets (20 products) | 4.99 to 7.78 | 2025 survey |
| Soap solution by hydrolysis | 8 to 9 | LibreTexts |
| Skin surface, estimated natural average | about 4.7 | Lambers et al., 2006 |
The survey covered children’s and sensitive-skin products sold in one Brazilian city, so it shows a pattern, not every bar in the world.
Why is soap alkaline?
Soap is alkaline because it is a salt of a weak acid and a strong base. Fatty acids are weak acids, with a pKa of about 4.9. When their sodium salt dissolves, a small share reacts with water and releases hydroxide ions, which make a solution alkaline. The saponification reaction is what creates that salt.
Is alkaline soap the same as caustic lye?
Alkaline soap is not caustic lye. A correctly made bar contains no free sodium hydroxide, because the reaction consumed the lye. Soap is alkaline through its own chemistry, while a caustic bar has unreacted sodium hydroxide left in it, which would make the bar harsh and perhaps dangerous.
Dunn tested his bars by titration and treated under 1 part per thousand of free alkali as safe. His titration, run in alcohol, is a different measurement from the pH of soap in water. A bar that stings points to a formulation fault.
Can soap be made at pH 5.5?
Soap cannot be made at pH 5.5, because acid turns soap back into fatty acids. LibreTexts notes that lowering the pH of a soap solution makes insoluble fatty acids precipitate as scum. Push far enough and the product no longer cleans like soap, because it is no longer soap.
What is a syndet, and what is in a pH-balanced bar?
A syndet is a synthetic detergent: a cleansing surfactant that is not a fatty acid salt. A bar sold as pH 5.5 has to be built on syndets, or a blend, because soap cannot hold that pH. Draelos describes cleansers as alkaline soaps or the less barrier-damaging syndets. In the 2025 survey, syndets measured 4.99 to 7.78.
Syndets are not worse or better in themselves. Wikipedia’s detergent entry notes that they are more soluble than soap in hard water. The label tells you which one a bar is, as in how to read a soap label.
What is the normal pH of skin?
Healthy skin is acidic, and the commonly quoted 5.5 is a little high. A 2006 study of 330 volunteers estimated the natural skin surface pH at about 4.7, below 5. The same paper reports that skin at pH below 5.0 was in better condition on barrier, moisture and scaling measures.
Does washing with soap change skin pH?
Washing raises skin pH for a while, and soaps and cleansers are the usual cause. A 2018 review says skin pH rises even after rinsing with water alone, and that recovery can take up to several hours before the skin reaches its normal level again.
The 2006 study also reports that an alkaline pH of 8 to 9 promotes dispersal of resident bacteria from the skin, while an acid pH keeps them attached. Skin pH is a proxy measure, not a measure of harm, and that paper came from a household products company’s research unit.
Is a lower pH always a gentler soap?
A lower pH is not the only thing that makes a cleanser gentle. Draelos links the lower irritation of syndets to a reduced tendency to denature protein, tied to the charge density of the surfactant aggregates, not to pH alone. The 2025 survey’s authors still concluded that bar soaps suit children’s skin poorly.
Do labels state soap pH reliably?
Labels do not state pH reliably. The authors of the 2025 survey noted a wide variety of values and a lack of reliable pH information on the packaging of most products. A pH claim is worth checking against the ingredient list, which shows whether a bar is soap or syndet-based, as in how to read a soap label.
Who might prefer a low-pH cleanser?
People with very dry, reactive or eczema-prone skin may do better with a syndet. Cheong’s 2009 review reports that studies found clinical improvement in atopic dermatitis when soap-free cleansers were used alongside topical treatment. For any skin condition, a dermatologist is the right person to ask.
If a bar leaves skin tight, check the formulation and cure before blaming pH.
What does the Indian standard say about soap alkalinity?
The Indian toilet soap standard limits free alkali, and we found no pH requirement in it. IS 2888:2004 lists free caustic alkali, measured as sodium hydroxide, and free carbonated alkali among its requirements. That fits the chemistry: pH describes the soap in water, while free alkali describes leftover lye.
How do you measure soap pH?
Soap pH depends on how the sample is prepared, so figures from different studies are not always comparable. The 2025 survey diluted each bar to 1% in distilled water and read it with a meter calibrated against pH 4 and 7 buffers. A reading taken another way can differ.
Frequently asked questions
- Why do some bars say "cleansing bar" instead of soap?
- Because the word soap has a narrow regulatory meaning. The US FDA treats a product as soap only if most of it is an alkali salt of fatty acids and it is sold solely as soap. A bar built on detergents, or sold for other cosmetic uses, is regulated as a cosmetic or a drug.
- Is liquid soap alkaline too?
- True liquid soap is, because it is also a fatty acid salt, usually made with potassium hydroxide. But many liquid products are not true soap. In a 2025 Brazilian survey, liquid cleansers measured pH 4.54 to 8.00, and the most common surfactant listed was cocamidopropyl betaine, a synthetic one.
- Does plain water change the pH of skin?
- Yes. A 2006 study found that tap water, at about pH 8 in Europe, raises skin pH for up to 6 hours before it returns to its natural value. A 2018 review likewise reports that skin pH rises after rinsing with water alone, so the effect is not unique to soap.
- Why does soap leave scum in hard water?
- Hard water contains calcium and magnesium, which make soap micelles clump and deposit as a dirty scum. Synthetic detergents are less affected because the sulfonate group they use binds those ions less readily. It is a difference in chemistry, not in how clean the water is.
